B12 Injections

Treatment of Vitamin B12 deficiency is by either injection or tablet. This will depend on your levels, symptoms and the cause of the deficiency.

  • Injections are used for people unable to absorb Vitamin B12 or have certain symptoms and will be prescribed by your GP
  • Tablets are recommended for people with dietary deficiency, in which case you will be asked to buy these over the counter. These should be bought as cyanocobalamin and are widely available at pharmacies, health food stores and supermarkets. The dose may vary between 50 – 150 micrograms per day or as high as 1,000 micrograms (1mg) per day.

Before Covid many patients were receiving Vitamin B12 injections who didn’t really need them.

During Covid we switched everyone over to tablets at large doses so that even those patients who weren’t able to absorb Vitamin B12 would have sufficient levels of Vitamin B12.

Since Covid, we have been careful only to prescribe injections to those patients who really need them, with advice to other patients to buy tablets as above.

Extra Information can be found in the following links, including the role and sources of Vitamin B12, as well as the causes and symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency.

Frailty

Frailty is a condition where your body becomes weaker and less able to handle stress or illness. It is often seen in older adults, but it can affect people at any age. Frailty can cause you to feel more tired, have less strength, and be at a higher risk of falling or getting injured. You might also experience unintentional weight loss, slower walking, and feel less energetic than usual.

Frailty doesn’t necessarily mean that something is wrong with your health, but it does suggest that your body is less resilient and might need extra care. It's important to address frailty by focusing on things like eating well, staying active, and managing any other health conditions you may have. With the right approach, you can improve your strength and reduce the risk of complications.

Patient Information: Frailty Score

General Practices are being asked to identify a measure of frailty on all our patients over the age of 65. This is done electronically within our clinical system looking at many factors in your clinical records.

This will allow the Practice to help set an individualised plan for actions to help keep patients healthy for longer.

If you see this measure on your clinical records it is nothing to be alarmed about and does not mean you have any new condition that you are not aware of.

Long Term Conditions

As your GP surgery we play a significant role in managing your long-term condition. We believe in working with you and specialists in the community to provide holistic, personal, and high-quality care.

All patients with a long-term condition should have an annual Long Term Condition review. The first part of this is with a Health Care Assistant. At this appointment, we will take a blood sample, check your blood pressure, and update other health data.

A Practice Nurse will review your results in Virtual Review slots, looking at your medical history and medications, and consider how together we could improve your health/management of your LTC. This may include health advice, medication changes or referrals to a community service.

If your results are all within range you will get a letter which will advise you that you will be seen again in 12 months. If you need something changing or a discussion this might be a phone call or a face-to-face appointment with a Practice Nurse.

See our long-term conditions page for further details

NHS Health Check

The NHS Health Check is a free check-up of your overall health. It can tell you whether you're at higher risk of getting certain health problems, such as:

  • heart disease
  • diabetes
  • kidney disease
  • stroke

During the check-up you'll discuss how to reduce your risk of these conditions.

If you’re aged over 65, you’ll also be told about symptoms of dementia to look out for.

The check is for patients aged 40 to 74 years old who may have long-term health conditions.
